Hereditary Material Homework Help

Hereditary material is a genetic material of the cell which is passed from one generation to the next generation. Hereditary material passes characteristics or traits from parents to offsprings. Mendel is known to be the person who came up with the concept of inheritance of genes and passing of traits or characteristics from parents to offsprings.

There are two different kinds of genetic material: DNA and RNA.

1. Deoxyribonucleic acid also called as DNA, is the genetic material or hereditary material of all the organisms except few viruses. It contains all the information regarding each and every function in the body. It is a hereditary material that is passed from the parents to the offsprings carrying characters from the parents. DNA is made up of two polymers which are antiparallel to each other. DNA polymers consist of nucleotides with phosphate and sugar backbone. It is called as deoxyribonucleic acid because it has deoxyribose sugar (instead of ribose sugar) attached to phosphate and base. Segment of DNA which code for particular protein is called as gene. Gene is a hereditary unit of transfer to offsprings by the parents.
2. Ribonucleic acid also called as RNA, is the genetic material or hereditary material found in some viruses. In other organisms RNA helps in the process of protein synthesis which is the expression of DNA containing genes. RNA is a single polymer made up of nucleotides with phosphate and ribose sugar (instead of deoxyribose) backbone.
