Plant Adaptation Homework Help

Plants have adaptations to survive in different areas. Adaptations are special features that allow a plant or animal to live in a particular habitat. These adaptations make it difficult for the plant to survive in a different place. This is why certain plants are found in only specific places. For example cactus lives in deserts. Cactus is well adapted to live in deserts. Aquatic plants require special adaptations for living submerged in water or at the water's surface. Adaptations:

1. In plants transpiration occurs to water evaporates from the stomata. But in dessert plants for example bitterroot, stomata are less in number and also small in size to reduce this water loss. In some desert plants, stomata open only at night to reduce water loss.
2. Some dessert plants have sagebrush made up of tiny hair on leaf to reflect sunlight and protect leaf from sun and heat.
3. To protect from dry and harsh conditions plants develop spores.
4. Waxy cuticles are developed to reduce water loss
5. Plants living in shades have more chlorophyll and less electron transport proteins.
6. In ferns, rhizome is underground adapted stem
7. Tubers are also underground stem which stores food.
8. CAM allows fixation of carbon only at night.
